About the Author
Hermann Hesse
The novelist and artist Herman Hesse was born in 1877 in a village in Germany’s Black Forest. Hesse was influential during the two World Wars; his work saw a resurgence in the counterculture era of the 1960s, in the United States, and remains popular today. Hesse received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. He died in 1962.
