Writing a book has been a lifelong dream. Achieving this goal in 2020 has been…interesting. Navigating my excitement, anxiety, imposter syndrome and the extra work while looking at the powerful movements and moments transforming our world has been thought-provoking. I wondered if it was the “right” time, if I should celebrate, or if it (the book, or I, the person) would make a difference. I didn’t get to sort out these worries with friends and colleagues the way I would have before COVID. But, dreams come true in the best and worst of times. For me, 2020 was my time so I carried on. Thanks to the pandemic stay at home orders, I also enjoyed the whole celebratory bottle of champagne the weekend I submitted my final draft. I wrote this book to empower people to get the job they want, not just the job they need. Investing in yourself and your career matters. Finding and landing the right role in your career is life-changing. It’s also really hard. Interviews are designed to solve for the company’s priorities. Although the entire process might take weeks or months, the conversations themselves are often only a few hours. Even the most proactive, prepared candidate gets precious few minutes with each person to ask the questions on their mind. Because of these and other challenges in the hiring process, and particularly during such a tight job market, it’s critical for candidates to focus on the right job opportunities and diligently prepare for their conversations.
