The goal is to ask for the promotion, but not demand it. Humbleness goes a long way here, so it’s good to acknowledge that you know there are still some areas where you can improve. The idea is to work with your boss to put together a roadmap for what you need to work on to get to a point where they’re confident in your abilities and comfortable going to bat for you when submitting their recommendation for your promotion.

All true, though I'd also add a counterpoint: In some organizations, promotion may not be handled fairly. You should know your value, and if you're making significant contributions and not getting recognition, it can make sense to figure out what's happening. For example, if it seems that others more junior or less qualified than you are promoted first, for example, then it may be worth having an honest conversation about it. Just ask what the reasoning is. After getting an answer, you can decide for yourself if promotions are being handled fairly.
